FUN STUFF TO LEARN:
The #NoMowMay movement
No Mow May is a popular conservation movement to encourage people to abstain from mowing their lawns during the month of May.
- YES! It allows weeds to grow and flower in the lawn to provide nectar and pollen to nourish early season pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
- HOWEVER! It mostly results in blooming dandelions. One article I read said that dandelion pollen is deficient in important amino acids.
If you want to support pollinator conservation, there are better methods for doing so.
- Create a pollinator garden using nectar- and pollen-rich plants.
- Plant spring flowering trees and shrubs.
- Consider planting a “bee lawn” that includes Dutch white clover
FUN STUFF TO DO:
What to do when you hit the “ungrateable” edge of a parmesan rind:
Don’t throw it out. Why?
Parmesan rinds are flavor boosters!
Store in the fridge or freezer and add to:
- sauces
- beans
- stews
- soups
- stock
The rinds will melt (not disintegrate) and release a little extra cheesy, salty (umami) flavor into your dish.
Parmesan cheese is already rough on the climate–it’s a hard, aged cheese which means it takes more milk and energy to make.
