FUN STUFF TO READ, LEARN, & DO

“The truth is we don’t need ten really passionate, committed environmentalists. We need one hundred or one million people who can do a little bit in that field and change things in their domain.”

History Smashers: Earth Day & The Environment
by Kate Messner
Ages 9-12+

Myths, lies, recycling scams? Discover the real story behind the first Earth Day celebration and some of the biggest US climate catastrophes–and their solutions!

FUN STUFF TO LEARN:

One reason why recycling programs fail: Contamination.

This happens when:

  • garbage & non-recyclable items are thrown into recycling bins
  • dirty containers leak food and liquid onto paper and cardboard

In a single stream recycling program, all recycled materials (glass, plastic, paper, cardboard) are collected in the same truck. Bottles burst under pressure. Remaining liquid and food residue contaminate the rest of the load. If paper and cardboard get wet, they can’t be recycled.

So, give everything a good rinse & dry them off before placing them in the recycling bin.

FUN STUFF TO DO:

Not sure if an item is recyclable? There’s an app for that!

RECYCLE COACH

We’ve been taught to recycle. Now it’s time to learn to recycle correctly–all tailored to where you live & work.

The Recycle Coach app has stuff for kids, quizzes to test your knowledge, and other goodies.

I love the photo option. Take a pic of the item in question and the app will tell you what to do with it & where to put it!
